Are sleepless nights, anxiety and depression a regular part of your life?

We can try to change the world and politics and global warming, but that will take some time. But there are things we can do for ourselves now.

When we are stressed, we are running on our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight mode) not our parasympathetic (rest, repair, digest) mode. It’s like operating with one foot on the gas pedal all the time and forgetting there is a brake.

What we can do has many options:

Breathing – When we operate under sympathetic control, we breathe fast and shallow. Parasympathetic breathing is slow and controlled. You can breathe for 5 minutes in parasympathetic and it will decrease your anxiety. Breathe in through your nose and try to breathe air into your belly. Start with 4 counts in, then hold for 2 counts and breathe out through your nose slowly to the count of 8.

My mother was a yoga teacher and she took me to an Indian Yogi who taught healing through the breath. He would have us do alternate nostril breathing, varying the count of hold and exhale. He said different breath timings and nostrils would send healing breath to different organs.

I found a simple book that teaches some of this. Pranayamas – The Yoga Breath by Yogi Ramacharaka is simple and wonderful for this.

Hugging – Hug someone who will let you and hold it for a few minutes. We are mixing our electromagnetic fields with theirs. It works best if they are not especially stressed.

Gratitude – Thanking people makes you feel good about yourself. It’s even better if they don’t necessarily deserve it and you thank them anyway. The Dali Lama says gratitude can heal the world.

Magnolia Bark – Magnolia reduces stress and anxiety and helps us get a good night’s sleep. Steep 2 tsp Magnolia Bark and 1tsp cinnamon for 10 minutes. The cinnamon helps keep our blood sugar good overnight. It regulates our neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. It boosts GABA which quiets anxious thoughts and activates our cannabinoid receptors.

Stress Formula – At MHC, we have a formula which is all herbal, formulated by Dr. Pam, which decreases stress.

Pain – If you are anxious due to pain, we have herbal formulas that decrease pain and inflammation.

Combinations – Combine CBD with Magnolia for a more lasting calm and without the fogginess CBD alone can give.

Vision Board – Make a vision board for yourself that has pictures that bring you peace or helps you focus on the wonders of your life instead of the stressors. It should represent your happy place, already manifested in the world.
