Our bodies like to have our eyes level with the horizon, or we can get vertigo. Multiple mechanisms in our nervous system coordinate to make that happen. If your pelvis is twisted, your body will have one leg longer and one shorter functionally. The rest of our spine compensates for that torque, causing spasms to straighten the spine. Our upper neck has unique properties that will keep our eyes level with the horizon by compensating with the top two vertebrae. The 2nd & 3rd neck (cervical vertebra) will correct to lower spine problems, the 1st and 2nd to food allergies and other systemic stressors. There is an old saying in chiropractic called “Love it Brother” if the lowest vertebra is “out” (L5), the top one is its brother (C1) and has to compensate.
If you have scoliosis, you have to start with the feet. We do a scan in our office electronically to see how your weight balances on your feet. We can prescribe custom orthotics to correct your feet made from this scan if need be. If your feet are not balanced on the earth, your hips, spine and neck must compensate, and you end up with scoliosis.
Your large intestine is the source of your microbiome, and if that is off, it reflects to our low back and can cause spasms. If any organ is distressed, it will cause spasms of the level of the spine that innervates that organ as well as irritation along the acupuncture meridian that feeds that organ.
If your sacroiliac joints are not moving balanced bilaterally, you can also become torqued in the anterior joint of the pelvis – the pubic symphysis – and get joint & leg pain as well. We can diagnose and correct this.
If you have food allergies, which are very common, it causes chronic inflammation throughout our GI tract, causing leaky gut problems, absorption problems which ebb and flow depending on how much you eat the offending food. But that chronic inflammation never goes away. It’s a common reason for migraine headaches (due to upper neck spasms and scoliosis).
If you have ever had an injury to your body, you may have a residual soft tissue memory that will maintain your scoliosis. You may also have an emotional memory residing in those tissues and physical correction will not correct it until the emotional issues is released. Acupuncture can help balance all your muscles and organ stressors as well.
We also evaluate you for specific muscle weaknesses that can interfere with holding your ideal alignment. We train you in rehab where you strengthen your weak muscles so they catch up to and match your strong muscles. We want our matching muscles (like the hip stabilizers) to match in strength.
Nutrition to weak organs can also play a big role. We can determine by muscle testing acupuncture alarm points which organs are under-functioning and what it takes to strengthen them. Our comprehensive approach is very successful in treating scoliosis – and is correcting and balancing your whole body at the same time.
