NOT TRUE. Many ingredients that are deemed so unsafe that other countries have banned them are still allowed in our American food system.
Take red dye #40. 40 years ago I learned in naturopathic college that it was a toxic chemical causing hyperactivity and ADHD, and I saw this in my practice as patients eliminated it and their child’s behavior improved. it took our FDA 40 more years of ignoring the evidence to finally – just this year – decide to ban it!
Skittles, pop-tarts, and Gatorade are banned in the EU because they contain toxic dyes like yellow 5, Yellow 6 and red 40. EU research showed these could harm our health, especially young children.
Coffee-mate, Ritz crackers and Pillsbury biscuits are all banned in Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Iceland, Norway and Denmark because of trans-fats like partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils. Wheat-thins and cereals like Frosted Flakes are banned in the United Kingdom, Japan and parts of Europe because of BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) used as a flavor enhancer.
Other foods banned overseas but not in America:
1 – Froot Loops – Banned in France, Austria, Norway and Finland due to artificial colors yellow 5 & Red 40. They also have soybean, cottonseed and hydrogenated coconut oil.
2 – US Chicken – The US washes its children in chlorine. EU has banned it since 1997, saying that if the chlorine is necessary, the chicken has been contaminated in the food chain. They also feed chicken arsenic and anti-biotics and estrogen to plump them up.
3 – Mountain Dew – banned in EU and Japan due to Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)
4 – US Milk – banned in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan and the EU. Most US milk is treated with rBGH – a synthetic growth hormone which allows farms to produce vast amounts of cheaper milk, but it is in the minority. This hormone increases the risk of breast and other hormone-related cancers. (You can buy rBGH-free milk in the US)
5 – Farmed Salmon – Banned in New Zealand and Austria. About 2/3rds of salmon in the US is farmed. The fish are kept in crowded cages and are fed with processed fish foods and all kinds of dangerous chemicals like methyl mercury & dioxins. They are also given antibiotics and other drugs not safe from humans. When you eat the salmon, you eat all these toxic chemicals. They also dye them so they look pink.
6 – Maraschino Cherries – banned in Norway, Finland, Austria and the UK. The vibrant red color is from red dye #40, damaging brain function and attention.
7 – Apples – banned in the EU due to DPA (diphenylamine) a potentially carcinogenic agent that keeps the fruit from browning.
8 – US breakfast cereals – Banned in Japan and the EU. Cereals like Rice Krispies, Honey Bunches of Oats and Frosted Flakes all use BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as a flavor enhancer – a known carcinogen.
9- US Pre-packaged beef – Banned in EU. It contains pink slime – a meat by-product used as a filler to decrease fat content. It is prepared with ammonia gas, approved by our FDA back in 2001.
10 – US Pork – Banned in EU, Russia and China. American pigs are bigger because there are given ractopamine, an animal feed additive that speeds up weight gain and increases carcass leanness. It is linked to major health problems and is banned in more than 160 countries, but NOT in the US.
11 – Coffee-Mate – banned in Austria, Hungary and multiple Scandinavian countries. It uses hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils, which are packed with trans fats, known to increase the bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol. Increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
12 – Skittles and multi-colored M&M’s – They have Yellow #5 and Yellow #6 and titanium dioxide to enhance color. Known to be carcinogenic and cause lung tumors.
SO, WHAT CAN WE DO TO EAT HEALTHY?
Eat organic. Read ingredients. If there is a long list, it’s probably not healthy. Eat whole foods. Your health depends on you!
