Is your memory as good as it always has been, or have you noticed a decline?
The first memory lapses are usually for name and recent events. Our long-term memory holds up better, at least for a while.
A current scourge of modern life is that many elders are still doing OK physically, but their minds are deteriorating slowly. It makes me weep to see people who can’t remember the names and faces of their loved ones, any of their passwords, what supplements and/or prescriptions they are supposed to take. It usually coincides with a change in personality, often towards more anger and irritability which their loved ones and caretakers have to navigate.
It is possible to prevent and even reverse memory loss – up to a point! The more severe and long term the loss, the more difficult it is to correct.
Number 1: Imbalance is to look at blood sugar. Alzheimer’s has been called diabetes III by some. The chronic high blood sugar increases glycation in our brains which damages our neurons.
Number 2: Circulation to the brain is increased with exercise. Just like it helps every other part of our body. Exercise increases blood flow and the oxygen to our brain.
Number 3: Nutrition directly affects our brain cells. What you eat gives the nutrients your brain uses to repair itself. Specific nutrients that help are Ometa-3 oils, especially DHA. Our bodies can’t make it, and it is the main Omega-3 in our brain. It helps to incases blood flow during mental tasks, increasing the speed and quality of communication and decreasing ADHD. DHA & EPA combined helps prevent and reverse heart disease, decreases triglycerides, increases HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers blood pressure.
Good sources are cold water fish. I prefer the small fish which are made up of phospholipids like our cell walls and it easily enters our cells. Plus, the small fish have not lived long enough to build up heavy metals and toxins from the ocean. Food sources are krill, sardines, mackerel and calamari. For vegetarians you can get DHA from algae. The fish eat the algae, so that is how the fish get the DHA.
Phosphatidylcholine provides the building blocks for our cell membranes repairing and protecting our trillium cells. Good food sources are flax, chia seeds and walnut. Taking it increases brain function, mental clarity, smoother digestion, better detox and more consistent energy.
